About the artist

Patrik Grijalvo (Bilbao, 1984) takes a further step in his process of sculpting photography begun many years ago (2010) with a series under the name “Photography as an object”. Whether he wanted to develop at that time an approach to Eduardo Chillida’s “Gravitations” or to Jerry McMillan’s cut-up photography studies (with his famous question “Is it necessary for a photograph to be flat?”), but with the distinction that The raw material where architectural photography is made by himself, he now goes beyond the depicted image to use it as colour schemes. This was already in his last series “Rotten Apples” (to be exhibited next April 2017 at the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao), in which if we approach the work we can appreciate that what were apparently flat black spots where vegetal latticework. Now, in “Gravitación Visual”, the same thing happens. Here the raw materials are manipulated in such a way that there remains a minimal hint of what these primitive photographs portrayed and the register of the work approaches the sculptural, leaving the spectator with almost no arguments to speak of proper photography.
